Why You Need Photos Together As A Couple
It’s no secret that we adore the documentation of love. With everything from formal photos to celebrate our anniversary, to the most casual set of photos like peach picking in Fredericksburg, we’ve got our fair share of pictures around the house. There is a stigma behind taking photos though: most people (especially guys) think of it as a chore and a dreaded task. Most women fret about what to wear and their appearance in the pictures. By the time the whole thing is over, you’re exhausted and just praying that one of the pictures turned out okay.
As two people who regularly take pictures of themselves, I wanted to offer a little advice on the subject, but more importantly, share why you need photos together as a couple in every stage of life. Not only do we love having them to look back on, but it’s a great way to strengthen your relationship and showcase it for future children, grandchildren, etc. I’m sure we can all agree that we’ve looked at old family photos and marveled at grandma’s collection of pillbox hats or the costume jewelry she wore. Whenever Brandon and I take photos, I can’t help but smile at the possibility of my future granddaughter assessing my wardrobe choice, or our our future son looking at the way his dad looks at his mom. We’re cultivating that each and every time we snap the camera.

High Quality Photos Around Your Home
I think our most enjoyable aspect right now is having great photos (like really great photos) scattered about the house. A lot of this is thanks to our great friend Lauren with Lauren Bosse Photography. We have a big gallery wall near our entryway and then keep a collection of seasonal photos in frames throughout the rest of the home. I also love creating photo albums and books and have a few sitting out currently.
Create Variety And Showcase Each Season Of Life
How many of us are guilty of only displaying wedding photos? We love our wedding photos but I knew that I wanted keepsakes from all the seasons of life. I want documentation of our time before kids just as much as I know I’ll want family photos and even maternity pictures. To us, the investment of hiring a photographer (or even just finding a willing friend) is so worth it. Additionally, we love taking our own photos, especially when we travel. Each photograph is a memory that’s kept and sealed forever.

Preparing For Your Photos: What To Wear and Where To Go
Since we have a little experience in this, I thought I’d offer up some general tips on outfit choices and location spots. Lauren (who took these photos) said that she recommends to all of her clients lighter colors. Blush pink, whites/creams, neutrals, soft blues, and pastel tones are easy to photograph and come out looking gorgeous. Sometimes a harsh red or jet black can come across looking intense and even reflect light in weird ways. While we don’t always stick to the lighter tones here on the blog, I definitely recommend them if you’re going to hire someone for photos. My dress in these photos is from the amazing Bella Bridesmaids here in San Antonio. If you’re local, they offer an exquisite selection of dresses that can work for any special occasion, as well as bridesmaid dress options. I truly love this shop and what they offer in variety!!
As far as location, we always gravitate towards natural landscape. Parks or wildlife areas (like the one here in these photos) work well because they’re groomed enough and also offer shade from the sun. You’ll want to pick a place that can give you some shade in case of harsh sunlight which can cause shadows in pictures. We lucked out here because it was an overcast day.
If you’re totally against a natural landscape area, consider places that won’t draw huge crowds of people. Even your own home can potentially become a shoot location! If you’re completely at a blank, it never hurts to google “Best photoshoot locations in {insert city}”.
Finally, it’s important to consider poses. As silly as it may sound, you should have a few ideas before you start taking pictures. How do you want these to look? We developed a post on the best poses for couples taking pictures together and found that all of these work in just about every setting imaginable. I hope that this helps you see the importance of why you need photos together as a couple and why we’re so passionate about the subject! Let us know if you have any questions!
