K: How are your New Year’s resolutions going? We posted about healthy recipes a few weeks back but have yet to really touch on a workout routine or how we stay healthy together. Brandon and I will be quick to admit that we’re far from perfect when it comes to an exercise routine, and we tend to fall short. With that being said, we’re trying to get better and more regular with our activities and have consistently found that our favorite “exercise” together is a simple walk. That doesn’t cut it as our only source of exercise together and we’ve also developed independent routines that are really starting to work for us.
Katherine’s Workout Routine
As mentioned, we try to walk as often as possible when weather permits. That doesn’t cut it for me as my only form of exercise and I joined Orange Theory Fitness back in June. I have the 2x per week schedule and absolutely love it! The workouts are intense, but the group mentality and amazing trainers really help me get through it. I’m not one who actually loves to exercise, but Orange Theory has helped to change my perspective a little bit. I get competitive with myself because the program urges you to get in the “orange zone” of your heart rate. This just means that you are working 12 minutes or more of your max heart rate, which is a guarantee to burn more fat and more calories. At the end of the workout, your “points” are tallied and if you’ve received more than 12 points, it is considered a great workout and promises that you’re burning additional calories 24-48 hours after the workout. I’m always pushing myself to get in that max heart rate zone and score my maximum amount of points. You can read more about the concept and the science behind it here.
Brandon’s Workout Routine
Since the New Year started, I’ve started working out in the morning before work. I finally came to the conclusion that I’m just too tired in the evenings when I come home around 6:30 or 7. Now, I’m up around 6 and do a quick workout that I’m intending to build upon. Starting slow with baby steps has been really important for me and so far, I’m doing weights and light cardio. My goal is to increase the rigor and time of the workout with each month.
